Great pear harvest!Back
Behind our swimming pool are six beautiful big pear trees. The last few years there have been few pears, but this year is different! We had a beautiful sunny and dry spring so many flowers were fertilized, our trees were really full of beautiful, big, Pera Rochas (rock pears).
The Pera Rocha is originally from Sintra (near Lisbon), but now this species is mainly grown in western Portugal (mainly at Cadaval / Bombarral). Also in our area (Silvercoast) you will see many orchards with trees full of pears. The harvest was earlier this year due to the hot weather, so we had already announced at breakfast that we would go to pick them later that day. Fortunately, we received a lot of help, especially from the three children and their parents who were staying with us at that moment.
The trees are not been completely empty and we already have 10 Dutch apple boxes full! Probably about 200 kilos!
Many peares have already given away and from the rest we make juice, pear jam and we are still looking for tasty recipes for a pear pie!
